We are pleased to offer
custom design services to adapt existing products to customer applications
or to offer special designs. By utilizing the Internet and CAD drawings
we can efficiently exchange ideas with you and create designs to meet your
specific requirements. Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
Following are examples of projects that we have recently completed.
A Plastic
Parts manufacturer required a small rotary joint, which could be used to
supply a small stream of cooling water into a tight space. We added a small
tube to an existing Rotherm rotary union to provide a solution. This all
stainless steel system provided a low cost solution. The customer has since
ordered additional systems.
A Chemical
Plant had a complex piece of equipment that required cooling. There was
a need to provide cooling water deep into a drive shaft to provide cooling.
The high speed of the shaft and the depth that the water had to go into
the shaft offered a challenge. An insert was designed to fit within the
shaft to connect to an extended tube within the shaft. Seals and bearings
were placed within the shaft to accommodate the turning speed. A two-passage
joint was then connected to the transitional piece to accommodate introducing
cooling water into the shaft and removing hot water. This customer has since
ordered additional systems.
A Controls
manufacturing company required a rotary union with two passages to provide
cooling water into a machining system. The rotor of the joint had to transmit
1200 pounds of thrust while providing two passages for cooling water into
the work area and heated water out of the work area. An Around the Shaft
rotary union design was provided complete with a shaft that could accommodate
the required connections and the high force.
Research
development was completed on a rotary union that could handle very high
lateral torque forces and slow turning with low breakaway torque. The media
transferred is molten salt at approximately 1000°F. The highly corrosive
media at elevated temperatures required special metallurgy and special seals.
A combination of stainless steels with ceramic bearings and seals was required.
Two prototypes have been prepared and the project is on going.
A manufacturer
of electrical slip joints required a rotary union with two liquid passages
and also with electrical circuits. The unit had to fit within a rotating
chamber and required exact alignment with existing connections. A collaborative
agreement resulted in Rotherm designing the overall joint utilizing the
customers electrical slip rings
A pharmaceutical
company required a rotary joint with twenty-four ports. A special manifold
was provided to accommodate the extra porting. This manifold was matched
to an existing Rotherm rotary joint design. The assembly is stainless steel.
